From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. A religion is a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, especially when considered as the creation of a supernatural agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs. Aspects of religion include narrative, symbolism, beliefs, and practices that are supposed to give meaning to the practitioner's experiences of life. Whether the meaning centers on a deity or deities, or an ultimate truth, religion is commonly identified by the practitioner's prayer, ritual, meditation, music and art, among other things, and is often interwoven with society and politics. It may focus on specific supernatural, metaphysical, and moral claims about reality (the cosmos and human nature) which may yield a set of religious laws and ethics and a particular lifestyle. Religion also encompasses ancestral or cultural traditions, writings, history, and mythology, as well as personal faith and religious experience. The term "religion" refers both to the personal practices related to communal faith and to group rituals and communication stemming from shared conviction. "Religion" is sometimes used interchangeably with "faith" or "belief system," but it is more socially defined than personal convictions, and it entails specific behaviors, respectively. Q. I did some reading on my art history book and it says something about how the empires back then used to use religion to fool the people into building empires. It has to do something with beliefs and whatever. Asked by bap32211 - Sun Nov 22 17:38:46 2009 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments A. That's a very crude way of putting it, but basically its correct. The purpose of all religion is to make group of people A do what group of people B want them to. Therefore, if you tell people the/a God will be happy with them if they build temples, or celebrate days, or build colliseums, they will. The Roman Empire fell because people started converting to christianity which preached polar opposite values (love, tolerance, etc) to the Roman pantheon (strength, power, dominance, honour) and became the Byzantinian Empire. Answered by Caolan C - Sun Nov 22 17:45:20 2009 What is the difference between a cult and a religion? Q. First of all I do not want to offend anyone however I would like to know. For example people say Scientology is both or just one. Some of you may say religion is true however there are many religions. Some of you may say religion has a deity but some religions don't. Some may say the age but there are some cults older than religions. Many cults are old and the creators are long dead Asked by P.CeeJ-Ay with the AK - Mon Feb 16 03:13:35 2009 - - 24 Answers - 0 Comments A. I've always been partial with the suggestion is "Political Power". Read the anti-Cult comments written by Plinny the Younger. What was considered a cult then is now a recognised multi-sect Faith. Anyone wanna guess which one? . Answered by Rai A - Mon Feb 16 03:32:20 2009 How important is the religion of a political candidate?
Q. Would you ever vote 4 a president that was either of a different religion that yours or of no religion? If not, why? Asked by Roxy - Sat May 2 21:19:32 2009 - - 24 Answers - 0 Comments A. I would like to vote for an Atheist, agnostic or Secular Humanist, as those are my beliefs. However, either there are no politicians of those beliefs, (except Svend Robinson, NDP, Canada), or none are willing to admit Atheism. Then there are stories like the mayor of Saguenay, Quebec, who wants to promote Catholicism. If someone is going to run as president, mayor, member of Parliament or whatever, in a democratic society, that person must be willing to represent all constituents, whether the citizens are theist or atheist. So the religion or atheism of the candidate doesn't matter so much - what matters is the candidate's openness to various beliefs and life philosophies.
