The Jews (Hebrew: יְהוּדִים "Yehudim" IPA: jɛhuːdiːm), also known as the Jewish people, are a nation and ethnoreligious group originating in the Israelites or Hebrews of the Ancient Near East. The Jewish ethnicity, nationality, and religion are strongly interrelated, as Judaism is the traditional faith of the Jewish nation. Converts to Judaism, whose status as Jews within the Jewish ethnos is equal to those born into it, have been absorbed into the Jewish people throughout the millennia. In Jewish tradition, Jewish ancestry is traced to the Biblical patriarchs Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the second millennium BCE. The Jews have experienced three periods of political autonomy in their national homeland, the Land of Israel, twice during ancient history, and currently once again, since 1948, with the establishment of the modern State of Israel. The first of the two ancient eras spanned from 1350 to 586 BCE, and encompassed the periods of the Judges, the United Monarchy, and the Divided Monarchy of the Kingdoms of Israel and Judah, ending with the destruction of the First Temple. The second era was the period of the Hasmonean Kingdom spanning from 140 to 37 BCE. Since the destruction of the First Temple, the diaspora has been the home of most of the world's Jews. Except in the modern State of Israel, Jews are a minority in every country in which they live, and they have frequently experienced persecution throughout history, resulting in a population that fluctuated both in numbers and distribution over the centuries. According to the Jewish Agency for Israel, as of 2007, there were 13–14 million Jews worldwide, 5.4 million of whom lived in Israel, 5.3 million in the United States, and the remainder distributed in communities of varying sizes around the world; this represents 0.2% of the current estimated world population. (Other sources cite higher estimates. For example, the Israel Central Bureau of Statistics estimates the number of Israeli Jews to be 5.6 million and the U.S. Census Bureau estimates the American Jewish population to be as many as 6.4 million.) These numbers include all those who consider themselves Jews whether or not affiliated with a Jewish organization. The total world Jewish population, however, is difficult to measure. In addition to halakhic considerations, there are secular, political, and ancestral identification factors in defining who is a Jew that increase the figure considerably. From Wikipedia under the

Q. Nobody compares more people and events to the Horrors of Nazi Germany. It seems like he's belittling the horrors that the Jewish community around the world had to endure. That's worse than just about anything I can think of on television. Asked by Kevin - Thu May 13 02:28:18 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. I actually saw something from about four months ago where some defimation league, possibly Jewish, released a report on the fear and hate-mongering and using Nazi images by the Fox pundits. While they noted that O'Reilly, Hannity and Rush were guilty of it, they called Glenn Beck the "fear-mongerer in chief". Although, it had to do more with Beck getting paranoid lunatics all riled up about the "shadowy government conspiracies" and "death panel" nonsense leading to encitements of violence than it did with being offensive to the Jewish people (though comparing the murder of over six million people to an attempt to get poor people adequate health care is pretty offensive...and RE-FU@KING-TARDED). I've been to Israel several and i am learning Hebrew. Now i am fed up with the UK and really would live to move to Israel. However not being Jewish doesn't help as from the information i gathered, only jewish people can enter and live in Israel permanently, with some exceptions: charity workers or with a work permit. Are you aware of any other ways? If i have to, i wouldn't mind converting to Judaism but this is not ideal as religion is not very important to me. Please help! I know non Jews who live there; they went there first for as long as their temporary visa allowed, and then applied for citizenship. You might like to contact the Israeli embassy in London. By the way; I'm a Brit too :) Answered by paperback writer - Fri Jan 11 09:08:47 2008 How is Chabad Lubavitch different from other Hasidic Jewish sects?
Q. I ve heard that Lubavitch is different from other Hasidic sects. What are their major differences? Isn't the most major difference the focus on outreach programs? What are the Lubavitch beliefs regarding outreach? Isn't this the most "liberal" Hasidic sect? I work for a Hasidic family after school but they aren't Lubavitch, I'm getting very interested in Hasidic Judaism and want to find the right sect for me. I'm Jewish but wasn't raised Orthodox but I want to become frum. Asked by Emma - Thu Dec 10 00:15:52 2009 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments A. Chabad differs from other Chassidic groups in the following manners: 1 - Dress. Most Chabad wear business attire during the week and wear a Chabad version of the Lithuanian Kappote on the Sabbath. Their wives dress more llike Modern Orthodox (always with Sheitel) rather than like other Chassidic groups. Many of the men will wear colored shirts on weekdays. Various Chassidic groups have their own dress codes, including men wearing silk socks, some wear knickers. Some wear long sleve shirts without sleve buttons. Chabad men wear Fedoras rather than the various Chassidic hats, even on the Sabbath. 2 - Speech. Most Chabad Rabbis in America are totally at home with Standard American English, something unusual for other Chassidim whose… [cont.] Answered by Aryeh M - Thu Dec 10 06:23:59 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Jewish" |
