Religion (from O.Fr. religion "religious community," from L. religionem (nom. religio) "respect for what is sacred, reverence for the gods," "obligation, the bond between man and the gods" is the belief in and worship of a god or gods, or more in general a set of beliefs explaining the existence of and giving meaning to the universe, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.

Aspects of religion include narrative, symbolism, beliefs, and practices that are supposed to give meaning to the practitioner's experiences of life. Whether the meaning centers on a deity or deities, or an ultimate truth, religion is commonly identified by the practitioner's prayer, ritual, meditation, music and art, among other things, and is often interwoven with society and politics. It may focus on specific supernatural, metaphysical, and moral claims about reality (the cosmos and human nature) which may yield a set of religious laws and ethics and a particular lifestyle. Religion also encompasses ancestral or cultural traditions, writings, history, and mythology, as well as personal faith and religious experience. The development of religion has taken many forms in various cultures, with continental differences.

The term "religion" refers both to the personal practices related to communal faith and to group rituals and communication stemming from shared conviction. "Religion" is sometimes used interchangeably with "faith" or "belief system", but it is more socially defined than personal convictions, and it entails specific behaviors, respectively.

Religion is often described as a communal system for the coherence of belief focusing on a system of thought, unseen being, person, or object, that is considered to be supernatural, sacred, divine, or of the highest truth. Moral codes, practices, values, institutions, tradition, rituals, and scriptures are often traditionally associated with the core belief, and these may have some overlap with concepts in secular philosophy. Religion is also often described as a "way of life" or a life stance.

What should do about my religious affiliation on my college applications?
Q. Currently I am applying to a few religious private colleges. I understand they lean towards certain religious backgrounds. The one I am doing at this very moment is a Catholic private college. I was raised Baptist but have been a practicing Buddhist for several years. Will putting down Baptist make my chances any better for a Catholic school? Besides the religious aspect, my GPA and test scores are much higher than the college's standards. I just don't want my religion to screw it all up.

A. Catholic schools pretty much divide the religious affiliations of applicants into "Catholic" and "non-Catholic." How much of a difference that makes to them depends on how strictly Catholic they are; someplace like Georgetown won't care that much, while somewhere like Boston College might. Either follow your conscience or leave it blank.

A. The religious significance of any article of religious clothing (underwear or otherwise) or jewelry is in the mind of the wearer and may or may not be shared with the rest of the world. It is something that the person who wears such considers sacred and considers a way to signify (to themselves, if no one else) who they are and what they should (or should not) be doing.

What is the religious significance of six fingers in japan?
Q. While reading about Todd Rundgren's album "Nearly Human", the article stated that the Japanese release changed the cover because of the religious significance of a six fingered hand. I was just curious.

A. I had no information on this affair so tried to find the definitive reason but I couldn't, so this opinion is based on a fact and my presumption. The fact is the reduction of one finger to show only 5 fingers on the cover. It is definitely true. "It is the album belatedly released due to the design of the cover with 6 fingers" (CD Journal, Japanese popular music magazine) "On Japanese version we can see only 5 fingers. I am wondering if they make consideration to human-rights group..." (personal blog In Japanese there had been, and even now is a word "four fingers" indicating Japanese outcast. That outcast "burakumin" was regarded as "chikusho" or beasts, and this slang indicates "four legged beast". The lobbying group of burakumin… [cont.]
