A newspaper is a regularly scheduled publication containing news, information, and advertising. By 2007 there were 6580 daily newspapers in the world (including 1456 in the U.S.) selling 395 million copies a day (55 million in the U.S). The worldwide recession of 2008, combined with the rapid growth of web-based alternatives, caused a serious decline in advertising and circulation, as many papers closed or sharply retrenched operations.

General-interest newspapers typically publish stories on local and national political events and personalities, crime, business, entertainment, society and sports. Most traditional papers also feature an editorial page containing editorials written by an editor and columns that express the personal opinions of writers. Other features include display and classified advertising, comics, and inserts from local merchants.

The newspaper is typically funded by paid subscriptions and advertising.

A wide variety of material has been published in newspapers, including editorial opinions, criticism, persuasion and op-eds; obituaries; entertainment features such as crosswords, sudoku and horoscopes; weather news and forecasts; advice, food and other columns; reviews of movies, plays and restaurants; classified ads; display ads, editorial cartoons and comic strips.

  • Universality: It covers a range of topics.

Is it time for newspapers to consolidate majorly into a mix of national and local news by region?
Q. I think newspapers need to evolve. Papers like USA Today should remain, but with a section added for the local area's news and sports. Combined like that, I think that's the only way for newspapers to survive. I think it's a great idea.

A. Why do you think all newspapers are not going to survive? Small markets may not support large papers, but seem to do well covering their local news. Large papers, which offend readers, lose buyers, thereby losing advertisers. Lets hope the newspaper industry scraps the over 100 year practice of sensationalizing the news. It causes the paper to lose its credibility. Just report the facts, and let the readers determine what take to apply to them.

How do teams that win the Super Bowl have newspapers that they won RIGHT after they win?
Q. Like right after a team wins, they hold up a newspaper that says: "___ Win Super Bowl!" Doesn't it take time to print newspapers? Do they print 2 newspapers beforehand with different winners each? Then how to they know the score? Guessing would be impossible. Someone please help!

A. They make them up in advance. If I'm not mistaken, there is no score on those pages the players hold up. Just like the hats and T-shirts; they make them up for both teams.

Q. The question pretty much covers it, but What are some advertisements (in magazines/newspapers) or commercials on TV that use physical appearence to advertise? For example, Gillette Fusion, it uses buff and good looking men to advertise, and barely shows the product itself. What are some others? Please & thanks for helping! :)
